What Is a Good Moveset for Machamp
There are a variety of useful Pokémon for nearly any battle you encounter in Pokémon Go. For those looking for a Fighting-type Pokémon to use when battling a Team Rocket member, in a raid, or to use against other trainers, you want to consider Machamp, one of the best Fighting-type Pokémon available. To fully utilize in a battle, what is the best moveset for it to learn?
Machamp is a Fighting-type Pokémon. It's weak to Fairy, Flying, and Psychic-type moves, but it's resistant to Bug, Dark, and Rock-type attacks. For PvP, it has a maximum CP of 3,056, an attack of 196, a defense of 137, and a stamina of 175. For PvE, it has an attack of 234, a defense of 159, and a stamina of 207. Despite not having the highest CP in the game, it's an incredible Fighting-type Pokémon, and many trainers have likely seen another player use them in the battle league, the game's PvP mode.
Here are all of the moves Machamp can learn.
Fast moves
- Bullet Punch (Steel-type) – 6 damage, 3.5 energy per turn (3 damage per turn)
- Counter (Fighting-type) – 8 damage, 3.5 energy per turn (4 damage per turn)
- Karate Chop (Fighting-type) – 5 damage, 3.5 energy per turn (2.5 damage per turn)
Charged moves
- Close Combat (Fighting-type) – 100 damage, and 45 energy (Has a 100% change to lower the user's defenses by 2.)
- Cross Chop (Fighting-type) – 50 damage, and 35 energy
- Dynamic Punch (Fighting-type) – 90 damage, and 50 energy
- Heavy Slam (Steel-type) – 70 damage, and 50 energy
- Payback (Dark-type) – 110 damage and 60 energyu
- Return (Normal-type) – 130 damage, and 70 energy
- Rock Slide (Rock-type) – 80 damage, and 45 energy
- Stone Edge (Rock-type) – 100 damage, and 55 energy
- Submission (Fighting-type) – 60 damage, and 50 energy
Machamp has various charged moves choices to pick from, but its best fast move option is pretty obvious. You want to go with counter, hands down. It does the most damage of all the options and provides the same amount of energy. All of Machamp's potential options provide the same energy, so it's all about the type of damage it can dish out, which is equally important. Counter provides the most benefits.
For charged moves, you have a few more options. But we can eliminate several of them right off the bat. You don't want to use return, submission, close combat, heavy slam, or stone edge. There are better options available to Machamp. Several Fighting-type Pokémon can use dynamic punch, and it's a decisive move to use. However, cross chop is an excellent choice, and you can fire it off exceptionally quickly compared to everything else. But with the recent additions of payback to Machamp's moveset, it's a bit more complicated. The combination of cross chop and rock slide is slightly better, but if you're worried about Psychic-type Pokémon beating it, you can swap out cross crop with payback. For any combination, you want to make sure you keep rock slide every time.
A Machamp using counter for its fast move and then cross chop or payback with rock slide for its charged moves will typically yield the best results. It's important to have a worthwhile Machamp in your roster because of how powerful it is and how common they're used in both the Ultra and Master Leagues.
